BURIED CROSSING

The Corps Colours

The buried crossing is used to cross-unmetalled surfaces, which are likely to be used by vehicles. Such surfaces are likely to be tracks or gateways into fields. Diagram of a Buried Crossing

Method:

  1. Mark 30cms on the near side away from the track with a peg where the proposed trench will be dug, and do the same on the far side.
  2. Using a shovel to dig a trench 23cms deep and 15cms wide on the track.
  3. Clear the trench of sharp objects (I.E. stones or other things that can damage your cable).
  4. Lay your cable inside the trench.
  5. Fill in the trench ensuring there are no sharp objects on top of the cable.
  6. Stamp down the replaced soil, making the surface as smooth as possible.
  7. Tie off the cable to the pegs with enough slack on either side to remake the crossing complete.
  8. Label both sides of the crossing.

Joints:
Joints are not permitted on the overhead or underground portion of crossings.

Crossings belonging to other units:
Do not use other unit's crossings - build your own. Should you use someone else's crossing and they recover their route first the chances are that they will cut your line to clear the crossing.

Power/Telegraph poles:
Post office telephone/telegraph and electrical power poles must (under normal conditions) be avoided at all times.
